Cyberlaw Conference to Provide Vital Inputs
8th November 1999 (Bernama)

PUTRAJAYA, Nov 8 (Bernama) -- The inaugural Asia-Pacific Conference on Cyberlaws opened here today will provide vital inputs for the enacting of multimedia-related laws.

Multimedia Universiti Management Faculty Dean Prof Sayyed Mohamed Ismail said the conference was timely in line with the government's strong emphasis on the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC).

As such, all aspects relevant to the MSC were important including the laws, he said when opening the conference. He represented the university's president Prof Dr Ghauth Jasmon at the opening.

About 150 multimedia practitioners from the United States, United Kingdom, Thailand, Australia, Singapore, New Zealand, Hong Kong and hosts Malaysia are attending the two-day conference.

"We believe the conference will be beneficial to the MSC and Malaysia's development. Although we don't have the powers to pass multimedia-related laws, at least the idea from our deliberations will be useful to law makers," he told a media conference after the opening.

The conference will, among other things, stress on the need for laws and regulations to check abuse of information on multimedia, copyright, patent, digital signature, Internet and on-line banking.

It is organised by the university under the sponsorship of Telekom Malaysia.
