Lee: Get Tough With Errand Cybercafe Operators
17th Jan 2000 (The Star)

PETALING JAYA: The Crime Prevention Foundation has urged the authorities to come down hard on cybercafe operators peddling pornography, violence and electronic gambling over the Internet.

Its vice-chairman Datuk Lee Lam Thye said there should be more effective enforcement of Section 211 under the Communications and Multimedia Act.

"Local authorities should also ensure effective enforcement to prevent misuse of cybercafes for negative activities such as gambling.

"There should also be registration of facilities which are accessible to the public, such as cybercafes," he said in a statement yesterday.

Lee, who is also a member of the National Information Technology Council, added however that a better alternative to such strict enforcement would be to inculcate good moral values and healthy attitudes among the youth.
